I once heard the Buddhist nun Pema Chodron compare addiction--anything that binds us and creates a compulsion--to scabies. She says that we are like a child with a bad case of scabies. If the child goes to the doctor, the doctor will tell him not to scratch because this only makes the scabies worse. The itch is so bad. The child wants to scratch.
